Building Day – 6th Feb 2009

Posted by: strathblane | February 6, 2009 | 32 Comments |

First of all thanks very much to everyone that has read our blog so far! We cant believe how many visitors we have had already.  We are now collecting flags of all the different countries that visit our site.

At the start of today we were wondering what was going to happen – all the chairs and desks were flipped over.  I thought we were gonna build more of Cairo.  Well we, it was great.  Alisha and me did the skyscraper, it was the best and it had writing on it.  We got a task and £12 and there was a shop called Carter and Allen supplies.  We had to buy materials to build a strong pyramid and skyscrapers had to be taller than the shortest person in your team with their hand raised.

It was a surprising day – this task was a new me!!

The jobs we had to do was time manager, team leader, engineer, buyer, Quality Control and designer.   The time manager had the main job because they had to set goals for every 1/2 hour.  You had to tick off every goal after you had done it.

On the skyscraper had no windows it had loads of colour.  I think it was quite good when Jon and me were colouring our building because it was colourful.

See writing page for a copy of some of the comments that could be heard throughout the day (Im sure they will make you giggle!) Also pictures to follow.

I saw all of you starting your challenge on Building Day. What impressed me most was how some groups took the time to listen to everyone’s views and opinions before making a decision. This is really important because it helps everyone feel valued and helps to find the best solution. I was impressed that some of the pyramids were able to hold 1kg 500g! These were really well thought through solutions. A huge strength is how enthusiastic you are towards improving your work. I am very impressed at what you are learning and how quickly you are learning!

Well done Jon. You will need to make us a Japan flag to put up on our board tomorrow! Im sure you can also tell us lots about all the other countries that have now visited our site.

Building day sounds like so much fun, and it sounds like you all worked together really well – well done. I hope there are going to be some photos of all your buildings on the website – it would be great to see them.

I think this is a fantastic blog. It’s quite clear P4 & P3 are enjoying learning about the Egyptians with a very stimulating and novel output through the blog! Keep up the good work!

i love the pictures miss allen

I agree with wat luke siad thanks for the pictures miss Allen!!!

Luke and Maia, you are both very welcome. I hope your toes have warmed up now! Glad you are enjoying the blog as much as I am! See you tomorrow.

Hiya, I live in France and my nephew, Jon Campbell lives in Strathblane..and goes to your school, I hope he will come and see me in France soon, or I will come and see him in Strathblane. Maybe when he is grown up he will go to egypt and see the mummys..I miss him.

Hello everyone at Strathblane! I have so enjoyed finding out about your Egypt project, it’s really interesting and I am going to build myself a snow pyramid as soon as it snows again – they were brilliant.
I visited Egypt myself last January and went to the Great Pyramid of Cheops. Although the pyramid itself is very big, the chamber in the middle is very small and hot. I also went to the museum in Cairo where the mummys are on display. To be honest, I felt a bit sorry for them all unwrapped. They looked a bit lost and lonely. My favourite things were all the treasures from Tutankhamens tomb – they were just fabulous and looked new, not thousands of years old at all.

Good luck with your work on Egypt!

In Istanbul, Turkey, there is an amazing carved column, called Theodosius Obelisk (Dikilitas). It is Istanbul’s oldest monument. It was built in Egypt 3500 years ago, and brought to Istanbul about 1600 years ago.
Maybe you can build a column on your next buildng project and call it Dikilitas.
Congratulations, your blog is progressing beautifully.

Hi Primary 3&4,

Greetings from Birmingham!!
I am really impressed by your blog and by the many comments from near and far!!
It sounds as if you are learning lots about Egypt and just as importantly about how to work well together to produce a worthwhile result.
I like the fact that although I am not in Strathblane I can understand so much about what you are doing in class.
Keep up the good work – well done!!

In Istanbul, Turkey, we have a famous antique building which is the famous Spice Market. Tourists from all over the world always visit it and buy all kinds of spices (Jamie, your Gran always gets her black pepper there). Well, this Spice Market is called the Egyptian Bazaar. It got this name because many spices were imported via Egypt in the Ottoman period,
Would you like us to send photos of the places we write about?

Dear Nene,
It would be excelent if you could send us some pictures of that famous spice antique store!

the gods in egypt are verry interesting and I love the topic miss Allen.

Hello P3 & P4
Just visited your blog for the first time and I am really impressed!

Its a great way of knowing what you are learning and it looks like a lot of fun!
Mrs Barrett

This morning I went up to p3 and p4 and I was looking at how the goup Ancient Egyptions worked as a goup. Everyboydy had a job to do and they all seemed to be doing their jobs well and understood that their role in the group was. They could of listened to each other a bit more but they coverd it up with amazing knowledge!

Today i went up to the p4 classroom and i thought the work was great i was working with the group called Ra i thought it was really intresting how that if they did not come to an agreement they would vote. At the start they told us that they had a few arguements but they are all sorted now. Calum was their group leader and they all co-operated well in there group and evreyone in the group liked who they were but the only bad thing was that Rebeca asked if she could have more girls in her group but everything else was great

Well done!!! :) from ian

This morning I went up to Primary 4 classroom to work with the group
6 Gods of Egypt, they were extremely cooperative and hard working. The whole group was listening to everyone’s ideas also they were including everyone and not leaving anyone out. I was amazed how well they worked together.

I was extemly impressed by the teamwork and co-operation from p3 and p4 which I observed this morning. I was working with the group Pharoas 2 and they were working together brilliantly and the art work was fabulous. They all stuck to their jobs furthermore they all worked together and included everyone. There was lots and lots of fantastic ideas being said and i think they are definatley an amazing example of how to work in a team. Each and every one of them worked maturley and excellently!

I love all the hard work everyone has put into this huge project. You all look like you had a great time doing, it from all the photos. I went to Egypt a long time ago and really enjoyed visiting the Pyramids and I loved the Museum in Cairo, it was amazing and so interesting. I do have to say that I feel I have learnt more about Egypt from you guys than when I was out there!
Well done all involved.

I hope I get 10 house points for going on the blog and writing a comment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that a real comment??!
